Logan Sargeant Biography

Born: 31/12/2000 Fort Lauderdale, USA

One of three rookies who made their Formula 1 debut in 2023, Logan Sargeant lined up with the Williams Racing team.

The latest in an acclaimed lineage of drivers to have earned an F1 race seat with the storied British team via its driver development programme, Sargeant replaced Nicholas Latifi and was paired with Alex Albon in Williams’ revised line-up.

Born in Fort Lauderdale, the Florida native based himself out of Europe during the initial stages of his career, and captured attention by becoming the first American since 1978 to win an FIA Karting World Championship title with his success in the 2015 CIK-FIA World KFJ Championship.

Strong performances at Formula 4 level – both in the UK and the Middle East – led Sargeant to the competitive Formula Renault Eurocup, where a race-winning turn earned him fourth in the standings.

Making his FIA Formula 3 Championship debut in 2019 with Carlin, a switch to the front-running Prema Racing team for 2020 saw Sargeant emerge in a tense three-way title battle with team-mate Oscar Piastri and ART Grand Prix’s Theo Pourchaire.

Entering the final race of the season tied on points with Piastri and starting ahead of the Australian at Mugello, Sargeant’s title aspirations were spoiled by a tangle on the opening lap that put him into retirement and handed the crown to his team-mate.

Staying in F3 for 2021, but tasting little success upon switching to Charouz Racing System, Sergeant returned to Carlin for his Formula 2 graduation in 2022, which in turn earned him a spot on Williams’ young driver roster.

Shining in a competitive and experienced F2 field, Sargeant’s two wins and sturdy consistency earned him Rookie of the Year status in fourth overall, which in turn assured him of the credits he needed to secure a superlicence. As a result, Sargeant was confirmed as a Williams Racing driver for the 2023 F1 season.

It makes Sargeant the first American to compete in F1 since Alexander Rossi contested a handful of races with Marussia in 2015 and coincides with the year that the series makes three visits to the United States in Austin, Miami and – for the first time since 1982 – Las Vegas.

21st – 1 point

Logan Sargeant had a rocky debut Formula 1 season, finishing 21st in the championship under temporary driver Liam Lawson. Sargeant’s highest finishing position was P10 at the United States Grand Prix.

He is the first driver to be outqualified by his team-mate at every single race in a season since Alex Albon was outqualified by Max Verstappen during their time together at Red Bull in 2020.
